The Mechanics
How Alberta Solar Savings Actually Accrue
Solar savings in Alberta come from two channels. First, every kilowatt-hour your panels produce that you consume on site is a kilowatt-hour you do not buy from the grid — saved at your full retail rate. Second, production you do not use in the moment is exported to the grid, and under Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation your retailer credits those exported kilowatt-hours at the same retail rate you pay for imports. Summer surplus builds credits that offset your winter bills, which is why a well-sized system is judged on the full year, not a single month.
Three things drive your payback period. System cost: what you pay per installed watt. Consumption match: how closely the system's annual production tracks your actual annual usage — Alberta's export credits reset annually, so production beyond your consumption does not add proportional savings. And rates: the higher your retail electricity rate, and the faster rates climb, the more each produced kilowatt-hour is worth and the sooner the system pays for itself.
A worked example. A household with a $200 monthly power bill maps to roughly a 10 kW system. In central Alberta, a 10 kW system produces approximately 11,000 to 12,500 kWh per year — enough to offset most or all of that household's annual consumption. At typical installed costs of $2.20 to $3.00 per watt, the system runs $22,000 to $30,000. Offsetting about $2,400 per year of power costs puts payback in roughly the 9 to 12 year range at today's rates, and every rate increase from here shortens it. After payback, the panels keep producing for the remaining 25 to 30 plus years of their service life.
