Alberta's Micro-generation Regulation is the legal framework that makes solar financially viable. It allows you to generate your own electricity, connect to the grid, and earn credits for the excess power you produce. Here is exactly how it works and how to maximize your returns.
How Alberta's Microgeneration Regulation Works
The Micro-generation Regulation allows Albertans to generate their own environmentally friendly electricity and receive credit for any power they send back to the grid. This is commonly referred to as "net metering."
When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home or business is consuming, the excess power flows backward through your bi-directional meter and onto the grid. Your utility provider tracks this exported energy and credits your account. When your panels aren't producing enough power (e.g., at night or during the winter), you draw electricity from the grid and use your accumulated credits to offset the cost.
Net Metering vs. Microgeneration
"Microgeneration" is the legal term for the regulation that allows you to connect your system to the grid. "Net metering" is the billing mechanism that credits you for the electricity you export. In Alberta, they are essentially two sides of the same coin.
System Sizing Limits
Under the regulation, your solar system is intended to offset your own energy consumption, not to act as a commercial power plant. Therefore, your system size is generally limited to your annual historical energy usage.
Maximizing Credits: The Solar Club Strategy
Because Alberta has a deregulated electricity market, you have the freedom to choose your energy retailer. This opens up a powerful financial strategy known as the "Solar Club."
Solar Clubs are specialized energy rates offered by certain retailers (like Spot Power or Park Power) specifically for microgenerators. They allow you to switch between two different rates depending on the season:
- High Export Rate (Summer): During the summer months when your panels are overproducing, you switch to a high rate (e.g., 30 cents/kWh). This maximizes the value of the credits you earn for exporting electricity.
- Low Import Rate (Winter): During the winter months when your panels produce less and you need to draw from the grid, you switch to a low rate (e.g., 8 cents/kWh). This minimizes the cost of the electricity you purchase.
Real Dollar Example: If you export 5,000 kWh during the summer at a standard rate of 8 cents/kWh, you earn $400 in credits. If you export that same 5,000 kWh at a Solar Club rate of 30 cents/kWh, you earn $1,500 in credits. This strategy can often result in a net-zero annual electricity bill.
Utility-Specific Notes
While the Micro-generation Regulation applies province-wide, the interconnection process and specific requirements can vary slightly depending on your utility provider (the company that owns the power lines, not the retailer you buy electricity from).
FortisAlberta
Fortis serves much of rural and suburban Alberta. They have a streamlined online application process for microgeneration. They require a detailed single-line diagram and site plan. Once approved, they will swap your existing meter for a bi-directional meter at no cost to you.
ATCO Electric
ATCO serves northern and east-central Alberta. Their process is similar to Fortis, requiring a comprehensive application package. They are generally efficient in processing applications and installing the necessary bi-directional metering.
ENMAX & EPCOR
ENMAX (Calgary) and EPCOR (Edmonton) handle microgeneration applications for the major urban centers. Their processes are well-established, and they often coordinate closely with municipal permitting departments.

The Microgeneration Application Process

System Design & Engineering

Application Submission

Utility Review
The utility provider reviews the application to ensure the local grid can handle the proposed system. This process typically takes between 2 to 6 weeks.

Inspection & Meter Swap
After the installation passes the municipal electrical inspection, the utility provider is notified. They will then come to your property to install a bi-directional meter and grant final permission to operate.
