System Options for Rural Properties

There's no single right answer. The best system depends on your loads, your land, your buildings, and your budget.

Ground-Mount Systems

The most common choice for farms and large acreages. Ground mounts can be sized without roof constraints, positioned for maximum sun exposure, and expanded later if your needs grow. We site them on marginal land — areas that aren't productive for crops or pasture — so you're not giving up anything to gain solar production.

Barn & Shop Roof Mounts

If you have a large, south-facing barn or shop roof in good structural condition, a roof mount can be more cost-effective than a ground mount because you avoid trenching and concrete work. We assess the roof structure, age, and orientation before recommending this option. A roof that needs replacement in 5 years isn't a good candidate.

Hybrid Systems

Some rural properties benefit from a combination: roof-mounted panels on the house or shop, supplemented by a ground array to reach the target system size. This approach can reduce trenching costs while still achieving the production needed to offset your full electricity bill. We model both options and show you the numbers.

Off-Grid Systems

How We Size a Rural Solar System

Sizing a rural system wrong is expensive. Too small and you're still paying significant electricity bills. Too large and you've spent money on production you can't use or credit back. We start with your actual consumption data — your most recent power bill — and build the system size from there.

Rural loads are seasonal. Grain dryers run in fall. Irrigation pumps run in summer. Heating loads spike in winter. We model your seasonal consumption pattern and design a system that balances production against usage across the full year — not just the average month. This is the difference between a system that actually zeros out your bill and one that just reduces it.

We also look at what you're planning to add. If you're buying an electric vehicle, adding a heated shop, or expanding your operation, we factor that in. It's cheaper to size the system correctly upfront than to add panels later.

The output of this process is a production model that shows you expected monthly and annual generation, estimated bill offset, and a financial projection over the system's 25-year life. We show you the payback period, the 10-year and 25-year return, and the break-even point. You make the decision with real numbers in front of you.

Net Metering in Alberta: How It Works for Rural Properties

Alberta's Micro-generation Regulation allows any property owner to connect a solar system to the grid and receive credits for excess production. When your panels produce more than you're using — common on sunny summer days — the surplus flows to the grid and your utility provider credits your account at the retail rate.

Those credits roll over month to month. Most rural systems in Alberta build up a significant credit balance from April through September, then draw it down from October through March. A properly sized system ends the year close to zero — meaning your annual electricity cost approaches zero, minus the fixed distribution charges your utility charges regardless of consumption.

The interconnection process requires an application to your utility provider, an electrical permit, and an inspection. We handle all of this. The timeline from application to approval varies by utility and location, but typically runs 4-8 weeks.

One thing to understand: the distribution charges on your bill — the fixed monthly fees for being connected to the grid — don't go away with solar. What solar eliminates is the energy consumption charge, which is typically 60-75% of a rural electricity bill. That's the portion solar is designed to offset.

The Financial Reality of Rural Solar

Solar is a capital investment, not a product purchase. You're paying a lump sum upfront to eliminate an ongoing operating cost. The question isn't whether solar is expensive — it is. The question is whether the return justifies the investment, and over what timeframe.

For rural properties with high electricity bills, the math is often compelling. A property paying $600 per month in electricity is spending $7,200 per year. A solar system that eliminates $5,500 of that annual cost pays back in 8-10 years, then produces free electricity for the remaining 15-17 years of its warranted life. The 25-year net benefit on that system is typically $80,000-$120,000 in avoided electricity costs, depending on how rates rise over time.

Electricity rates in Alberta have increased significantly over the past decade. There's no reason to expect that trend to reverse. Every year you delay solar is a year you're paying full retail rates. Every year after the system pays off is a year of free electricity.

Power Bill Review

Send us your most recent power bill. We review your consumption, identify seasonal patterns, and determine whether solar makes financial sense for your property. No site visit required at this stage.

Site Assessment

We visit your property to assess roof condition or ground-mount locations, shading, electrical panel capacity, and interconnection requirements. This is where we identify any infrastructure issues that need to be addressed.

System Design & Proposal

We produce a detailed system design with production modelling, financial projections, and a fixed-price quote. We walk you through the numbers and answer every question before you sign anything.

Permitting & Utility Application

We handle all permits — electrical, building if required, and the utility interconnection application. This is typically the longest part of the process. We manage it so you don't have to.

Installation

Our crew installs the system. For ground mounts, this includes trenching, concrete footings, racking, panels, inverter, and electrical connections. For roof mounts, it's racking, panels, inverter, and electrical. We clean up completely when we're done.

Inspection & Energization

The electrical inspector signs off on the installation. Your utility provider installs a bi-directional meter. We commission the system and walk you through the monitoring app so you can track production in real time.

Rural properties often have higher bills than urban homes because of large shops, irrigation pumps, grain dryers, and outbuildings. Those loads are exactly what solar is designed to offset. Rural systems are typically larger, more complex, and involve more infrastructure. You may have long runs of underground conduit from the array to your service entrance, three-phase power for large motors, multiple meters, or aging panel infrastructure that needs upgrading before solar can be added. Rural properties also tend to have better solar resources: no shading from neighbouring buildings, full southern exposure, and room for ground-mounted arrays.

Under Alberta's Micro-generation Regulation, any electricity your system produces that you don't use immediately gets exported to the grid. Your utility provider credits your account for that exported power, which offsets what you draw from the grid at night or during low-production periods. Credits roll over month to month. In summer, most rural systems produce a surplus. In winter, you draw down those credits. A properly sized system zeros out your annual electricity bill — or comes close to it.

Not if you're grid-connected. Alberta's net metering program effectively acts as a virtual battery — you bank excess production in summer and draw it back in winter. Physical batteries add cost and complexity that most grid-tied rural properties don't need. Where batteries make sense: if you have critical loads (water pumps, refrigeration, medical equipment) that can't tolerate outages, or if you're far enough from the grid that connection costs are prohibitive. We'll tell you honestly whether batteries pencil out for your situation.

System size is determined by your electricity consumption, not by your property size. We start with your most recent power bill to understand your actual usage and seasonal patterns. A typical rural acreage with a house and small shop might need a 15-20 kW system. A working farm with grain handling, irrigation, or livestock equipment might need 40-80 kW or more. We size the system to offset your actual consumption — not to sell you the biggest system possible.

From signed contract to energized system, most rural installations take 6-12 weeks. The timeline depends on permit processing times with your utility provider, equipment lead times, and weather. Ground-mount installations take longer than roof mounts because of trenching and concrete work for the racking. We give you a realistic timeline at the start and keep you updated throughout. We don't disappear after the contract is signed.

Solar systems transfer with the property and typically add to its resale value. A fully paid-off solar system that eliminates or dramatically reduces electricity costs is a selling feature, not a liability. If you have a solar loan, it can be paid out at closing or transferred to the buyer depending on the financing terms. We've seen properties sell faster and at higher prices because of solar — particularly in rural Alberta where electricity costs are a significant operating expense.

Agricultural operations may qualify for the Canadian Agricultural Partnership (CAP) program, which provides cost-share grants for energy efficiency improvements including solar. The Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) offers low-interest financing in participating municipalities. There are also federal investment tax credits available to incorporated businesses. The incentive landscape changes regularly — we stay current on what's available and factor it into your financial analysis.

Modern solar panels are built for harsh climates. They're tested to withstand hail, heavy snow loads, and temperature swings from -40°C to +40°C. Panels actually perform better in cold temperatures than in heat — Alberta's cold, sunny winters are ideal for solar production. Snow slides off panels naturally as the sun warms them, and the reflection off snow (albedo effect) can boost output on clear winter days.
