Demand Charges: The Analysis We Run Before We Quote

Commercial accounts in Alberta fall into two broad rate classes. Consumption-metered accounts are billed on the energy they use, in kWh — the same structure as a residence, and the structure most small commercial services have. Demand-metered accounts are billed on energy plus a demand charge: a fee based on the peak power draw, in kW or kVA, recorded during the billing period.

The distinction matters because solar primarily offsets kWh. On a demand-metered account, a meaningful share of the bill is demand and fixed charges that solar does not directly reduce — so a quote built on consumption alone would overstate your savings. That is not a reason demand-metered accounts cannot benefit from solar; it is a reason the analysis has to be done properly before any number is put in front of you.
