How Solar Works in Alberta

A plain-language explanation of how solar energy systems work in Alberta — from panel output and winter performance to grid connection and what to expect from day one.

The Basics

Solar panels contain photovoltaic (PV) cells that convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts this DC power to alternating current (AC) that your home or building uses. When your panels produce more than you need, the excess flows to the grid. When you need more than your panels produce, you draw from the grid as normal.

The system operates automatically. There is nothing to switch on or off. A production meter records how much electricity your system generates, and your utility bill reflects the net of what you consumed versus what you exported.

Annual Sunshine

Winter Performance

Snow

Snow temporarily reduces output but sheds naturally on most roof pitches within a day or two of accumulation. Ground-mount systems can be cleared manually if needed.

Hail
