Solar for Alberta Farms: Your Accountant Has Been Waiting for This Call
If your Alberta farm is incorporated, the federal government will hand you back 30 percent of your solar system cost in year one. Here is how it works.
Alberta farms run on electricity. Well pumps. Grain dryers. Shop heaters. Heated waterers. Pivot irrigators. The bills are not small. And every dollar that goes to the power company is a dollar that does not go back into the operation.
Solar changes that equation. And for incorporated farms, the federal government just made it a lot easier to say yes.
The ITC: 30 Percent Back in Year One
If your farm is incorporated, the federal Investment Tax Credit gives you 30 percent of your solar system cost back as a refundable tax credit in the first year. Not a deduction. A credit. The government writes you a cheque.
On a $60,000 system that is $18,000 back before the panels have been up for 12 months. That drops your effective cost to $42,000. On a system that will produce free electricity for 25 years.
The same government that has been taking from Alberta for 50 years just handed you a cheque. Take it.

Why Farm Solar Pays Back Faster
Farms use more power than city homes. That is the whole reason solar works better out here. More consumption means a bigger system, but it also means a faster payback because you are offsetting more expensive grid power.
- —Residential payback: about 10 years
- —Farm corporation with ITC: 5 to 7 years
- —After payback: 15 to 20 years of free power
Ten years sounds long until you realize the panels last 25. That is 15 years of free power after payback. Your mortgage does not do that. Your truck does not do that. Your grain dryer definitely does not do that.
Ground Mount Is the Farm Advantage
City installers default to rooftop because that is all they have. On a farm you have something better. Land.
Ground mount systems let you pick the perfect angle and orientation. No compromise for roof pitch. No drilling into your shop roof. No worrying about snow sliding off and taking a panel with it. Point it south, angle it right, walk away.
Ground mount almost always outperforms rooftop in Alberta. That is not an opinion. That is what the production numbers say across 200+ installs.
How Microgeneration Works on a Farm
Panels generate electricity. Whatever your operation does not use gets exported to the grid. Your wire service provider gives you credits for that exported power. In summer you bank credits. In winter you draw them down.
Most of our farm customers end the year at or near zero on their electricity bill. The well pump still runs. The shop heater still runs. You just stopped paying for it.
What a Farm System Costs

- —Mid-size operation, 20 to 30 kW: $50,000 to $70,000

Those are before the ITC. After the 30 percent credit, a $60,000 system is effectively $42,000. Spread that across 25 years of zero power bills and the math is not even close.
