One Trailer, Several Wells

The trailer carries the solar array on a tilting rack, the Grundfos CU 200 SQFlex control unit, and a weatherproof quick-connect. Each well keeps its own down-hole kit: the pump, drop pipe, wire and a low-water probe. Drive up, snap the cam-lock water coupler and the weatherproof power connector, and pump until the tank is full. Move to the next well when it is.

The water connector is a one-inch cam-lock coupler and the power connector is a genderless weatherproof plug, so any trailer plugs any well. A rancher with several wells buys one trailer and one down-hole kit per well; each extra kit is a priced add-on.

Because it never touches the grid, the trailer needs no FortisAlberta interconnection and no micro-generation application. Ground-mounted panels need an electrical permit; there is no building permit for a ground mount.

The Water Math

Alberta Agriculture budgets about 15 imperial gallons a day for a lactating cow-calf pair in summer heat. A solar pump does its real work in the middle of the day, about six productive hours on an average-to-good southern Alberta summer day. So the daily water a trailer delivers is roughly the pump flow times six hours times sixty minutes, and the pairs it serves is that yield divided by 15 imperial gallons.

The well is the limit, not the sun. On a good day the array can drive the pump for about as long as a typical 4 to 5 US gallon per minute well will give water. A low-water probe cycles the pump so it never runs the well dry, which also spreads pumping across the solar day. On a cloudy day output falls short, and that shortfall is covered by stored water, not by batteries.

Three Configurations by Well Depth

The pump is the same helical-rotor solar submersible in all three, a Grundfos 6 SQF-2 rated to 395 feet of lift and up to 6 US gallons per minute. What changes with depth is the yield and the array: a deeper lift needs more power to move each gallon, so a bigger array holds the same six productive hours. The final pump is confirmed against your well report and pump curve before we order.

Store Water, Not Electricity

Size the tank for the number of poor-sun days you want to ride through. The common guideline is three to four days of the herd's demand. The standard build includes one 2,500 imperial gallon Norwesco poly cistern that gravity-feeds the trough. That carries at least a full poor-sun day plus well-recovery pauses, and for a larger herd it covers less, so we add a second cistern to reach the full three to four day guideline when a drought or a long cloudy stretch makes it worth it. The tank is the battery here, and water is far cheaper to store than electricity.

What It Costs

Built and delivered in southern Alberta, a complete trailer with one down-hole kit and a 2,500 gallon cistern runs from about $16,700 to $18,900 with GST included, depending on well depth. That is turnkey: we supply the trailer, assemble, test and deliver. If you supply your own trailer and assemble it yourself, the materials-only price runs from about $12,900 to $14,700 with GST included. Each additional well down-hole kit adds roughly $7,200 to $8,000, and each extra cistern about $3,000, GST included.

We price at real sourced cost plus a thin margin rather than padding to a market middle. For a shallow-lift portable float unit the Alberta entry point is lower, around $5,000 from other prairie builders, but that is a different and simpler animal than a submersible built to reach 300 feet with days of storage. The deep-well submersible builders on the prairies quote privately, so there is no clean published price to peg to, and we would rather show you the real numbers.

The Grant That Halves the Cost

The On-Farm Water Supply program covers 50% of eligible off-source solar watering, up to $40,000, and it is open through March 2028. A pump trailer that moves cattle off a dugout or creek and onto a pumped, stored supply is off-source watering, which is exactly what qualifies. We size and quote the trailer; you submit the application.

For farms and businesses the Clean Technology investment tax credit is a 30% refundable credit that solar equipment is expected to qualify for. Confirm the details with your accountant.
