Carbon is a hamlet of about 486 people set among the dryland grain fields and cattle operations of Kneehill County, out toward Three Hills and the edge of the Drumheller badlands. It is also, plainly, the closest town in this batch of work, roughly 80 km and about 70 minutes from our shop. That is not a marketing line. Carbon collects about 2,379 peak sun hours a year, representing a genuinely strong central-Alberta resource. Translated into the numbers that matter, a 7.6 kW system produces roughly 9,830 kWh over a full year here, and a cleanly oriented 10 kW array scales to about 12,900 kWh. Most Carbon yards give us a choice, and we do not pretend one answer fits every property. A big, unshaded shop or barn roof is often the economical option because the structure already exists, so you skip the trenching and the racking is lighter. If the good roof faces the wrong way, is broken up by vents and skylights, or is simply too old to want panels on it for the next 25 years, a ground mount takes over.
Our ground mounts sit on heavy-gauge steel racking driven onto piles or set on concrete piers below the frost line, engineered to the local snow-load zone S2 and wind zone R3. That lets us aim the panels due south at the ideal tilt regardless of what any roof is doing, and a tilted ground array sheds snow faster than most rooftops besides. It costs a bit more in material and trenching, and it buys ideal orientation in return. At the site visit we look at both, run the numbers, and tell you which one actually wins for your yard, rather than which one is easier for us.
