Grid-Tied Solar in Alberta: Why the Grid Is the Best Battery You Will Ever Own
Grid-tied solar uses the Alberta grid as your battery. No expensive battery bank. No maintenance. Just credits that stack up in summer and carry you through winter.
People hear "solar" and think batteries. Expensive battery banks in the garage. Charge controllers on the wall. A generator for backup. That is off-grid. It costs a fortune and most Alberta homeowners do not need it.
Grid-tied solar is simpler. Cheaper. And for most properties in Alberta, it is the smarter play by a wide margin.
The Grid Is Your Battery
A grid-tied system connects your solar panels to the existing electrical grid through your wire service provider. When your panels produce more than you use, the surplus flows back to the grid. When you need more than your panels produce, you pull from the grid as normal.
The grid stores your surplus for you. No battery bank. No maintenance. No replacement costs in 10 years. The grid just takes your excess and gives it back when you need it. That is the deal. It is regulated under Alberta's microgeneration regulation.
How Solar Club Changes the Math
Here is where grid-tied gets interesting in Alberta. During the high-production months — spring, summer, and early fall — your system cranks out way more than you use. With Solar Club, you get reimbursed at the 30 to 33 cent rate for that surplus. That builds up a serious credit balance.
Those credits carry you through winter. When production drops and consumption rises, the nest egg covers the gap. The bigger the surplus you build in summer, the more of your total annual bill gets wiped out.
This is why system size matters. At 80 or 90 percent of your consumption, you will not generate enough credits during those high-rate Solar Club months to build a reserve that lasts through winter. That is why we focus on installing the biggest system we can get approved under the microgeneration limit. More panels. More summer credits. More of your bill erased over the full year.
What Grid-Tied Eliminates
- —No battery bank ($10,000 to $20,000 saved)
- —No charge controller
- —No backup generator
- —No battery replacement every 10 to 15 years
- —No monitoring a battery state of charge
A grid-tied system is panels, inverters, and a connection to the grid. That is it. Less equipment. Less maintenance. Less that can break.
Grid-Tied vs Off-Grid: When Each Makes Sense
Off-grid makes sense when you have no grid connection. Remote cabins. Backcountry properties. If you are physically unable to connect to the grid, off-grid is your only option and we can build that too.
For everyone else — and that is 95 percent of Alberta property owners — grid-tied is the obvious choice. You already have a grid connection. Use it. The grid is the cheapest, most reliable battery ever invented. It does not degrade. It does not need replacing. It just works.
What It Costs
Grid-tied systems are significantly cheaper than off-grid because you are not buying batteries. Here is the range:
- —Small home, 5 to 8 kW: $15,000 to $22,000
- —Acreage home, 10 to 15 kW: $25,000 to $38,000
- —Farm or shop, 15 to 30 kW: $38,000 to $70,000
If your farm or business is incorporated, the federal Investment Tax Credit gives you 30 percent back in year one. That drops payback from 10 years to 5 to 7. After that it is free power for another 15 to 20 years.

What We Install
LONGi panels. We install all major inverter brands but after testing everything on the market we keep coming back to APsystems microinverters for most residential jobs because of their low failure rates. Each microinverter handles two panels, and each pair operates independently. One pair gets covered in snow, the rest of your system keeps producing.
We are Alberta-owned and Alberta-operated. 218 installs and counting. We do acreages, farms, shops, and homes across rural and central Alberta.
Free Site Assessment
We come to your property. We check your roof or your land, look at your electrical panel, and review your power bills. Then we give you an honest quote within 48 hours. We will size the system to maximize your Solar Club credits so you are offsetting as much of your bill as possible over the full year.
I will give you a number. You think about it. If it makes sense, you call me. If it does not, no hard feelings. I have got enough work.
