Why Lethbridge Beats Everywhere Else
Solar panels do not care about temperature. They care about sun. Specifically, direct hours of it. Lethbridge averages around 2,500 hours of sunshine per year. Calgary gets about 2,400. Vancouver, for reference, is closer to 1,900.
That extra 600 hours per year compared to the coast is straight-line production. More kilowatt-hours off the same panels. More Solar Club credits in summer. More of your power bill erased over the course of a year.
Cold actually helps too. Solar panels lose efficiency when they overheat. Lethbridge summers are hot but the wind off the Rockies keeps things moving. Winter sun is brutally efficient. A $60,000 ground-mount system costs you $42,000 after the ITC. On a farm with a $1,200 monthly power bill through irrigation season, payback is in the 5 to 7 year range. After that it is 15 to 20 years of free power production while your neighbours keep cutting cheques to the retailer.
