Southern Alberta consistently ranks among the highest solar irradiance regions in the country, with more clear sky days, more direct sun hours, and more kilowatt-hours per panel per year than Calgary, Edmonton, or basically anywhere east of the Rockies.
For a Lethbridge property owner, that means a solar panel installed here produces more power over its 25-year life than the same panel installed in Red Deer or Sherwood Park. The math is geographic. Solar Club style rate plans credit your account at the going market rate when your system overproduces, and that rate has run 30 to 33 cents per kilowatt-hour in recent years. Those credits build through the peak production months from May through September.

Factor in electricity rate escalation at even 3 percent annually and the effective payback tightens again. The same 10 kW system in Edmonton would produce roughly 10 percent less, which is the whole reason Lethbridge payback consistently beats the provincial average. If your operation is a farm or incorporated business
The federal Investment Tax Credit gives eligible corporations and farm operations 30 percent of the system cost back in year one as a refundable tax credit. On a $30,000 system, that is $9,000 credited against your tax bill. Payback drops from the 7 to 10 year residential range to 4 to 6 years for an incorporated farm.
The Lethbridge area is full of incorporated farm operations: irrigation farms, feedlots, mixed grain, dairy. All of them qualify under the same federal framework.
