Duchess Gets More Sunshine Than Most of Canada
Duchess sits in the Eastern Irrigation District near Brooks, right in the driest and sunniest corridor of southern Alberta. Approximately 2,480 hours of bright sunshine per year. That is more annual sun than Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, or any major city east of the Rockies. This is not a marginal solar location. This is one of the best in the country.
The land around Duchess is flat, open, and unobstructed. No tall buildings, no dense tree canopy, no mountain shadows. Just prairie sky and solar exposure from sunrise to sunset. That kind of geography is exactly what solar panels need to perform at their rated capacity day after day.
Duchess is also a short drive from Dinosaur Provincial Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for some of the richest dinosaur fossil beds on Earth. The same dry, clear climate that preserved 75-million-year-old fossils in that badlands landscape is the same climate that makes your solar panels produce electricity at above-average rates. Different benefit. Same sun.
Duchess receives approximately 2,480 hours of bright sunshine annually — placing it in the top tier of solar-productive locations in all of Canada.
Alberta-Owned Solar for Duchess Properties
Range Road Solar is not a national chain. We are not from Ontario. We do not farm leads and sell your information to three different installers who then fight over your phone number. We are an Alberta-owned solar company that installs solar panels on Alberta properties. That is the whole operation.
We have completed 218+ installations across the province — acreages, farms, shops, homes, and commercial buildings. We know Alberta weather. We know Alberta soil conditions. We know Alberta wind loads. And we know Alberta utility paperwork backward and forward. When you call us, you talk to us. Not a call centre. Not a subcontractor from another province pretending to be local.
Duchess is a community of about 1,100 people in Newell County. It is the kind of place where you know your neighbours and you want to deal with people who understand how things work out here. We get that. We show up, give you a straight number, and let you decide. No pressure. No two-hour kitchen-table pitch. No contract you need a lawyer to read.
Equipment Built for the Prairies
We install LONGi panels. They are one of the largest and most reliable panel manufacturers in the world — tested for hail, rated for extreme cold, and backed by a 25-year product warranty. These are the panels we trust on our own projects and recommend based on hundreds of Alberta installs.
For inverter technology, we use APsystems microinverters and Solis inverters depending on the system design. With microinverters, every pair of panels operates independently. If one panel gets snow-covered or shaded by a grain bin, the rest of the array keeps producing at full output. No single point of failure. That matters on farm properties where shade patterns shift with equipment and structures throughout the day.
For properties that want energy storage, we offer battery backup systems. Store excess daytime production for evening use or grid outage protection. Common choice for rural properties in the Duchess area where power reliability is not always guaranteed.
218+ Installs Across Alberta
We have installed solar systems on properties from the Peace Country to the Montana border. Farms, acreages, rural homes, shops, commercial buildings. Every one of those installs was done by our crew, with our equipment, under our supervision. We do not subcontract the work and disappear.
The Brooks corridor — Duchess, Tilley, Rosemary, Bassano — is familiar territory. We know the terrain, the soil conditions for ground mounts, and the wind exposure that requires heavy-gauge racking. Your system is designed for where you actually live, not for a suburban subdivision somewhere else.

Your Duchess Utility Connection
Your local wire service provider handles the distribution infrastructure for the Duchess area. Confirm your provider from your utility bill — it will tell you who manages the lines to your property. We handle all interconnection paperwork, micro-generation applications, and meter coordination regardless of your provider.
The interconnection process is straightforward. We submit the application, provide the technical specifications, coordinate the inspection, and get your system approved for grid connection. You do not have to call the utility company yourself. That is our job and we have done it hundreds of times.
Incentives That Actually Move the Needle
The federal Investment Tax Credit returns 30 percent of your solar system cost in year one — but only for incorporated businesses. If your Duchess farm or ranch is incorporated, this is the single best incentive available to you. On a $60,000 system, that is $18,000 back. Your accountant will call it the best line item on your return this year.
Federal ITC (30%)
Available to incorporated farms and businesses. 30 percent back in year one. Applied against corporate tax owing.
Emissions Reduction Alberta
Provincial program supporting clean energy adoption. Eligibility and amounts vary — we walk you through the current options at your assessment.
Canada Agricultural Partnership
Federal-provincial program with funding streams for agricultural properties investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy.
We stay current on all available programs and walk you through every option at your free assessment. Incentive programs change — we make sure you do not miss anything.
Net Metering: Your Meter Works Both Ways
Alberta's micro-generation regulation allows properties up to 5 MW to connect solar systems to the grid and receive credit for excess production. When your panels produce more than you consume, the surplus flows to the grid and your meter runs backward. You bank credits that offset future consumption.
During long summer days in Duchess, your system will overproduce significantly. Those credits carry forward and cover the shorter winter days when production dips. The result for most of our clients is a near-zero annual electricity bill. Your power company still sends a statement. It just does not ask for much money anymore.
